Fairfield Evergreen Cemetery Association

Serving the area since 1870

Who We Are

The Evergreen Cemetery Association is a private non-profit corporation. It is a non-church, non-tax supported, perpetual care cemetery.

There are over 11,000 former citizens and family members laid to rest in the 40 acres that make up the old city cemetery and Fairfield Evergreen Cemetery.

A board of Directors oversee the operation of the cemetery’s affair. A fulltime superintendent manages the daily business of the cemetery maintenance. Additional part-time help is needed in the summer months to help with mowing and trimming.

The cost of maintaining the cemetery grows every year. Today we face serious challenges in maintaining our community’s cemetery. Unfortunately, the cemetery is something we take for granted and think little about until its time to go there for the burial of a loved one. Historically the funding of the cemetery has come from lot sales, burial income, a stipend from the city of Fairfield to maintain the old city section, and occasional donations and grants.

While costs continue to climb, today’s burial rates are trending downward, from 88 burials in 1990 to 62 in 2000 to our current average of 40 which is due to declining population, and the increase in cremations.

The board has set a goal to raise 2 to 3 million dollars to place in an endowment fund to be able to continue to maintain the cemetery, take care of the stones in need of repair, and replace and maintain over 2 miles of driving roads in and around the cemetery. The urgency of this fund is necessary as the condition of the cemetery continues to deteriorate.
